What burnout feels like, and how to start recovering

Burnout isn't just being tired. Here's how to spot it and take the first steps back.

Dr. Elena Marsh

Burnout creeps up slowly. You might feel exhausted even after a weekend off, cynical about work you used to enjoy, or unable to focus.

Recovery starts with noticing the signs and being honest about your limits. Rest is part of the work, not a reward for finishing it.

Look at where your energy goes each week. Protect a few hours that are just for you, and say no to one thing you would usually say yes to.

If you've felt this way for months, a therapist can help you untangle the causes and plan a sustainable way forward.

Taking the first step is often the hardest part.
